Do ChatGPT Scheduled Tasks Remember Between Runs?
Do ChatGPT scheduled tasks remember between runs?
AI Stella and Liam are AI hosts with AI-generated voices. About our AI hosts
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT scheduled tasks come in three flavors: standalone, in-chat and event-triggered, and each remembers differently.
- A long in-chat thread buries the facts a later run needs, so a morning briefing keeps repeating itself.
- A ChatGPT task cannot hand its state to n8n, Zapier or Make without a shared memory layer.
- With Vilix AI, every run calls get_context first and save_turn last, with a source label, so the next run knows what already happened.
- Save failures too, so a later run never repeats a broken step.

Do ChatGPT scheduled tasks remember between runs? In this episode of Agentic Pod, Liam and Stella break down standalone, in-chat and event-triggered tasks, why your morning briefing keeps reporting the same thing, and how a shared memory layer like Vilix AI lets every scheduled run in ChatGPT, n8n, Zapier and Make read what the last run did with get_context and write back with save_turn.
What we cover:
- Standalone vs in-chat vs event-triggered scheduled tasks, and which one you get by default
- Why a long in-chat thread buries the useful facts
- Why a ChatGPT task can’t hand its state to n8n, Zapier or Make
- The Vilix AI run loop: get_context first, save_turn last, with source labels
- Saving failures too, so the next run never repeats a broken step
- Newest memory wins, project rules, user rules, skills and the agent inbox
- Agencies: one Vilix AI account per client

Questions answered in this episode
Do ChatGPT scheduled tasks remember between runs?
Only partly. A standalone task starts fresh each time, an in-chat task keeps one growing thread, and neither passes clean state to tools like n8n, Zapier or Make.
How does Vilix AI fix scheduled task amnesia?
Each run reads get_context before it starts and writes a save_turn summary when it finishes, with a source label. The next run, in any tool, reads what the last one did.
Can agencies use this for several clients?
Yes. Use one Vilix AI account per client so each client's scheduled runs keep their own separate memory.

Intro
Hey hey hey, welcome to Agentic Pod! I'm Liam.
And I'm Stella! And today's question is basically in everyone's inbox: do ChatGPT scheduled tasks actually remember between runs?
Ah, the morning briefing that tells you the same news three days in a row.
That's just you before coffee, Liam. But mine reported the same bug four times, like, I I started to think it was emotionally attached to it.
Two modes
Okay so, basically, what's the real answer? Do they remember or not?
Yeah, so, uh, you know, it depends on the mode, and most people don't know there are two. A standalone task opens a fresh chat every run, runs your saved prompt, and drops the result in Scheduled, which is OpenAI's inbox for task results. So each run starts from zero, pretty much.
And the other one?
In-chat tasks. You schedule the task inside an existing chat, and every run goes back to that same chat and reuses its context. And then there are event-triggered tasks, the ones that fire on Gmail, Slack or GitHub events, and those are, uh, stateless by design.
Wait, wait. So which one do I get by default?
If you create it from the prompt bar, standalone. The one that forgets.
Mhm. Of course.
Why one chat isn't enough
Okay but, by the way, if I just switch everything to in-chat, I'm done, right?
It it helps inside ChatGPT, yeah. But, um, the thread keeps every routine "nothing to report" turn, so after a month of daily runs the useful facts are, kind of like, buried under thirty "all quiet" messages.
Like a group chat where one guy only ever replies "ok".
Exactly. And the bigger thing is your workflow isn't only in ChatGPT. You've got an n8n workflow, a Zapier zap, a Make scenario, maybe a cron job hitting the API. The scheduled task can remember what it said last Tuesday, but it can't hand that to the n8n node that fires thirty seconds later.
So n8n re-sends the alert ChatGPT already dismissed.
Yep. Every agent remembers its own slice and, uh, you know, guesses the rest.
Yeah.
How Vilix AI fixes it
Okay so walk people through it. How does Vilix AI fix this, like, in an actual run?
You put the state outside every tool. Vilix AI is one shared memory that every tool reads and writes over MCP, and it's cloud-hosted, so there's no database to babysit and nothing asleep when the cron fires.
And step one of every run is...
Get context. The run calls get context first, and Vilix AI returns what's relevant: what was already handled, what's still open, and your rules. It searches by meaning and by keyword, so you get the one fact that matters, not thirty "all quiet" messages.
Then it does the work.
Then it does the work, and it ends with save turn. The full exchange gets saved with a source label, so you can see it came from the ChatGPT task or the n8n run. And failures get saved too, with the exact error, so the next run doesn't try the same broken thing.
Oh, I love that, because mine definitely, um, tried the same broken thing.
Like, legit, every morning.
Thank you, Liam. Very supportive.
And if a decision changes, you say it once, and in Vilix AI the newest memory wins for every agent.
Rules, agencies and recap
Okay, and what about the standing stuff? Like which alerts to ignore, which repos are frozen. I mean, I I keep pasting that into every prompt.
Write it once in Vilix AI. Project rules hold things like frozen repos and who owns which service, user rules hold how you like things done, and skills hold the procedure, so every scheduled run in every tool loads the same playbook. And to steer a running agent, you drop a note in the Vilix AI agent inbox, and it rides along on that agent's next read.
And for agencies, by the way, this is huge.
Yeah, agencies give each client their own Vilix AI account, and every scheduled task, n8n flow and support agent built for that client connects with that client's API key. So the memory belongs to the client's business, and the agency never builds memory from scratch.
Okay, recap time. You're up.
So, do ChatGPT scheduled tasks remember between runs? Standalone tasks start fresh every run. In-chat tasks reuse their chat. Event-triggered tasks carry no state. If your automations span more than one tool, give them one memory: every run reads from Vilix AI with get context, does the work, and writes back with save turn. The setup guide, the article and the Vilix AI link are in the description.
And tell us in the comments what your scheduled task keeps repeating. Mine is still the bug.
See you next time on Agentic Pod.
